Turn the idea into a specification

Write down markets, instruments, resolutions, history depth, update frequency, data fields and delivery. A historical backtest and a live price display may share a symbol but require very different services.

Also distinguish market prices from fundamentals, company events, options chains and news. Those are additional datasets with their own coverage and timing rules.

Match the delivery model

Bulk files can support repeated local research without retrieving the same history for every test. An API can suit targeted requests or an application that needs current endpoints. A maintained local database can fit a supported analysis platform. Each choice changes your integration and maintenance work.

Check the rights your application needs

Retaining data, using it inside a business and showing it to customers are different uses. Read the provider’s license and any exchange requirements for your exact purpose. A developer-friendly download link does not itself grant redistribution rights.

Our shortlist
